Rounds 5 and 6 of Formula Kart Stars took place at the weekend at the Welsh track Glan Y Gors. Ash had mixed fortunes over the weekend.
Saturday was a disaterous day for Ash, first a dropped chain and then a broken steering column all conspired against him in the heats and cost him dear. Saturdays final saw Ash go from P13 to finish in 6th place having made up seven places.
Sunday started off little better than Saturday. Timed Qualifying - Dropped the chain - again!, Heat 1 - 24th on the grid to make up 19 places during the 15 lap race to finish in 5th. Heat 2 - Away from 14 to take the flag in 8th. Those reults were only good enought to give Ash a grid position of 6th for the final. By the end of lap 2 in the final Jacob Huntsone and Archie White had become the first casualties of Ash's race bid. Lap 5 saw Parker, Barlow and Jones all fall prey to Ash. He led the race for the next 5 laps. On lap 11 Barlow re took the lead, Ash lost a little time defending against Declan Jones. The delay was sufficient for Barlow to increase his lead. Although Ash was able to make up ground on Barlow over the remaining laps he was unable to take the lead, and crossed the finish line some 2/100ths of a second behind first place man Jack Barlow.
Ash said of the weekends racing "All in all I was disappointed with the result, as I know we should have been significantly better placed. Saturday was mechanical issues a dropped chain in qualy then a broken steering joint. It was always going to be a big ask as we have only had a few test sessions to try and find the right set up on the new CRG chassis. For whatever reason I was just off the pace.
Ash was out testing the follwing Monday, unbenown to Ash the mechanic undertook a couple of blind trials. The race rubber that Ash had used during Glan y Gors showed it'self to be almost half a second a lap slower than the practice rubber. Ash said "Unfortunatley it's the luck of the draw when it comes to tyres. Although they are all supposed to be the same we all know that this is not the case and some tyre sets prove to be quicker than others, and I think that proves it."
Ash's dad said " Although Ash was disappointed wth his results I felt that he aquitted himself well. Mechanical problems on Saturday cost us. Sunday was a close finish 2/100ths of a second, another lap and we may well have taken it. Ash was unfortunate in so much as a 5 place penalty in the heats affected his grid position for the final. Had he not taken the penalty things may well have been very different. Should Ash have been held to account for other drivers being out of position on the form up lap, the jury's still out on that one -- you'll just have to decide for yourself. We aren't sure how this will affect the championship positions yet we will just have to wait and see when it's published". |
