Hand ready to tear up the track in style with Voi Jeans sponsorship deal
Tuesday, 24 August 2010 20:26

SWOOSH

He is already leading the way in the Lewis Hamilton and Bernie Ecclestone-backed Formula Kart Stars (FKS) Championship, but now highly-rated Nuneaton karting star Ash Hand will be able to set the pace away from the track too – after being snapped up as an ambassador by dynamic fashion brand Voi Jeans.

Ash is currently on-course to follow in Hamilton’s wheeltracks by lifting the coveted laurels in what is arguably the toughest karting series in the country, with an outstanding six victories to his credit from eight rounds to-date in 2010 – and in the most recent of those, at Genk in Belgium, the 16-year-old left every single one of his rivals trailing come rain or shine in a crushing display of dominance. Clearly a young man on a mission, he admits that the interest from Voi is a genuine boost.

“I’m really happy about it,” enthused the Maple Park teenager. “I already bought Voi’s clothes beforehand, but now I’ll get some new ones every quarter. It’s a fairly new brand that’s aimed at teenagers, and it’s nice that they believe in me enough to sponsor me like this. It shows that people recognise my performances, and it’s a big thing for me to be chosen to represent them.”

Having been founded back in 1988 as a family-run denim specialist, Voi has grown over the interceding two decades to firmly establish itself as one of Britain’s most recognisable labels amongst teenagers in particular. At the forefront of cutting-edge style, many high-profile celebrities wear the brand including music groups Diversity and JLS, martial arts fighter Alex Reid and cast members from popular soaps Eastenders and Hollyoaks.

With the huge interest in motor racing at the moment thanks to the F1 World Championship-winning exploits of Messrs Hamilton and Jenson Button, Reena Navsaria from the company’s marketing department explains that there could not be a better time to begin supporting a promising young talent in the sport and following his career as it develops.

“Ash is obviously up-and-coming, and his name is still growing within that industry,” she explained. “Voi likes to endorse young people, and we thought this was a great opportunity to support someone like him. Voi is quite a sporty brand, so Ash’s racing makes him a perfect fit for us.

“A lot of people are into motorsport, and karting certainly seems to pull in the crowds – and with the success of Lewis and Jenson, it’s without doubt a great time to be getting involved! We hope Ash will be able to go on to follow in their footsteps. He certainly looks to have a bright future ahead of him, and we really think he can go all the way.”

Hand ‘rains’ supreme as weather fails to dampen his European dominance
Tuesday, 17 August 2010 17:06

Ash Hand travelled to Genk in Belgium for the seventh and eighth rounds of the Lewis Hamilton and Bernie Ecclestone-backed 2010 Formula Kart Stars (FKS) Championship bidding to re-assert his authority in the chase for the coveted crown – and despite the unpredictable weather doing its best to make life difficult for competitors, he fulfilled that brief and then some.

Having proven unbeatable with four straight triumphs earlier on in the campaign in the same series as had first set Hamilton on the fast track to future F1 superstardom, Ash’s seemingly unstoppable title bid then hit an unexpected speed bump in rounds five and six at Glan Y Gors in North Wales, with a rogue batch of tyres and set-up issues limiting him to a second place and a sixth – and reducing his advantage in the drivers’ standings to a scant three points in one fell swoop.

That hitherto commanding advantage would swiftly be re-established, however, as the highly-rated young Nuneaton hotshot headed cross-Channel determined to build upon the run of podium finishes he had achieved aboard new chassis CRG in the preceding Super 1 and Kartmasters outings – with a return to the very top step.

“I think after Glan y Gors we needed to win again, so that was the aim,” the 16-year-old reflected. “I’ve been quick at Genk over the last few years so I was confident of being quick again – what I didn’t know was what everybody else would be like.

“Genk is a really good, fast-and-flowing drivers’ circuit, and one of those tracks you never get bored on. That makes it quite challenging, because if you take your eye off the ball you lose time really quickly – it’s easy to make a mistake if you don’t stay concentrated. Over the weekend I saw a few people going off-line, and after that it was game over for them for three laps basically because the dirt you pick up just kills the tyres.

“The CRG has always tended to go well in Europe, and it felt consistently planted all weekend, in all conditions. I was able to learn a lot more about it and everything just clicked which made it easy to go fast, and I could always pull a few tenths extra out of it whenever I needed to. It was quite a boost knowing I always had something in reserve. I think it was the best kart in the field overall, so after that the rest of it was down to me.”

The Maple Park speed demon would go on to complete his part of the deal in style, qualifying a quarter-of-a-second clear of anybody else on Saturday to annex an unrivalled pole position amongst the 23-strong Junior Max class field and following that up by prevailing in his two heat races to the tune of five seconds or more each time, setting fastest lap in both encounters for good measure. And after that, well, the all-important final was really just a formality.

Having notched up his maiden national victory for CRG, however – “It felt brilliant to be back winning again; it proved to people that the kart is really good and that I’m driving well too,” he acknowledged – Ash rapidly made it clear that he was not satisfied with just that, and when the heavens opened with a vengeance the next day, he was able to show that he is every bit as adept and imperious in the wet as in the dry.

With his quality as a fast-learner transpiring to be key to his outstanding success, the P1 Racing ace’s first timed lap in Sunday qualifying was a full three tenths of a second out-of-reach of what any of his adversaries could muster all session, and the heats, similarly, were almost a carbon copy of 24 hours earlier. As he admitted to never really feeling threatened all weekend, the second day’s final was in truth the only time all meeting that anyone got so much as remotely close to Ash, and even then he had it all comfortably in-Hand, if you’ll pardon the pun.

“It was really wet and Genk is one of the most difficult circuits to drive in those conditions, but I figured it out pretty quickly and found the grip a lot sooner than anyone else,” he explained. “I was on the pace right from the start on Sunday – nobody else could really keep up.

“In the final, I knew I was going to be fast again after the heats. I had an eight-second lead at one stage and when I looked over my shoulder at the end of the start/finish straight I saw the others hadn’t even come onto it yet, so at that point I knew nobody was going to catch me and I just backed off and kept everything consistent.

“I didn’t really feel under much pressure all weekend if I’m honest, but I still had to stay focussed because if you don’t, it doesn’t take much to make a mistake. Being on my own on the track made it difficult to retain that focus at times, and it would have been quite simple really to get ahead of myself. The only thing that kept me going lap-after-lap was trying to beat or match my lap previous time...”

With no-one else to have to chase or defend from, it is indeed all-too-easy to lose concentration and end up in the tyre barriers, especially in such torrentially treacherous conditions – but to his immense credit, Ash mastered everything that was thrown at him with admirable aplomb, and the fact that his chief rival for glory finished off the podium was merely an added bonus as the George Eliot School pupil demonstrated that he had the pace whatever the weather and ably reminded everybody just who is boss. All-in-all, you really had to Hand it to him.

Ash goes down fighting as tyre woes cost him chance of defending ‘GP’ crown
Sunday, 01 August 2010 00:00

Ash’s chances of successfully defending his hard-fought ‘GP’ plate from the 2009 Kartmasters outing were effectively extinguished by myriad tyre woes that left the highly-rated young Nuneaton star battling to all intents and purposes with one arm tied behind his back – but he made damn sure he didn’t go down without a fight.

Twelve months ago, Ash claimed one of the greatest successes of his career to-date by triumphing in the blue riband Kartmasters meeting at PF International in Lincolnshire, and he returned there this year buoyed by the timely boost of having achieved his maiden victory aboard his new CRG chassis – onto which he had only switched a month earlier – followed by a brace of podium finishes in the hotly-contested national Super 1 Series at Larkhall in Scotland.

“I was extremely confident going into the weekend, but not cocky,” the 16-year-old confirmed. “I knew I had the speed to win, but I also knew there would be a lot of other good drivers there as well. All the top names were there, which made it the toughest field of the year.”

Not only that, but with Kartmasters being a one-off event – and a prestigious one at that, uniting the very crème de la crème of British karting talent – a different mentality tends to prevail out on-track, with only one real prize to be had and no championship points on offer, leading to some occasionally reckless driving standards as all 39 Junior Max competitors eagerly chased the coveted trophy. And all that around a circuit that is in any case all-too often a magnet for accidents and trouble at the first corner and first hairpin....            Ashley_Hand_2148_web

Larkhall Super One round 5 sees Ash twice on the Podium
Tuesday, 27 July 2010 18:07

Round 5 of the Super One Championship took place at Larkhall over the weekend.

Ash and his CRG steed managed to post the fastest lap in the qualifier. He went on to win both heats. The first of the two heats was a close run thing with Ash coaxing the CRG chassis across the finish line a full 2.4 seconds ahead of James Singleton. In the second of the heats Ash was able to resist the challange of Andy King to take the win by almost 2/10th of a second.

The performance demonstrated by Ash gave him pole position for the first of the finals. Ash managed a clean start closely followed by P3 man Andy Kingfolowed by the rest of the pack. Ash was able to hold the lead for most of the 24 lap race. On the last lap and less than a handfull of corners from the chequered flag, he found himslef on the defensive which allowed Andy King to poach first place. Despite a vallient attempt Ash had to settle for second place being pipped by a mere 2/100ths of a second.

Larkhall clubbie win as a pre cursor to Super One Round 5
Monday, 19 July 2010 20:18

Over the weekend Ash was racing at Larkhall, this was a club meeting however he was there amongst a number of drivers who are all competing in next weeks round of the Super One Championship which is due to be held there.

Considering that it was a club meeting and where it was, the competition was very strong. Ash's CRG chassis performed faultlessly, although he wasn't on his competion engine he more than showed that he was a force to be reckoned with.

Heat 1 saw Ash away from 10th on the grid, making up 8 places by the time the chequered flag went out to finish in second. The second heat Ash was similarly placed on the grid at 11th this time making up 9 places again claiming second place finish. Heat 3 and a P2 start bringing the CRG chassis home in 1st place.

The hard work in the heats gave Ash a P2 start behind Andy King. Andy King led the race from the off with Ash in close pursuit, a coming together on lap six saw Ash drop a place to Oliver Hodgeson. This was short lived with Ash regining second place on the next lap. King leading the race was relentlessly reeled in by Ash. Lap 13 of the 15 saw King finally fall to Ash's charge. Ash's pace over the last two laps saw him open up the lead to take the win in the A final by almost .7 of a second.

Next week sees Ash back at Larkhall for the Super One Championship and ready to do the business that he loves so much.

Mixed Fortunes at Glan Y Gors
Monday, 05 July 2010 18:20

Rounds 5 and 6 of Formula Kart Stars took place at the weekend at the Welsh track Glan Y Gors. Ash had mixed fortunes over the weekend.

Saturday was a disaterous day for Ash, first a dropped chain and then a broken steering column all conspired against him in the heats and cost him dear. Saturdays final saw Ash go from P13 to finish in 6th place having made up seven places.

Sunday started off little better than Saturday. Timed Qualifying - Dropped the chain - again!, Heat 1 - 24th on the grid to make up 19 places during the 15 lap race to finish in 5th. Heat 2 - Away from 14 to take the flag in 8th. Those reults were only good enought to give Ash a grid position of 6th for the final. By the end of lap 2 in the final Jacob Huntsone and Archie White had become the first casualties of Ash's race bid. Lap 5 saw Parker, Barlow and Jones all fall prey to Ash. He led the race for the next 5 laps. On lap 11 Barlow re took the lead, Ash lost a little time defending against Declan Jones. The delay was sufficient for Barlow to increase his lead. Although Ash was able to make up ground on Barlow over the remaining laps he was unable to take the lead, and crossed the finish line some 2/100ths of a second behind first place man Jack Barlow.

Ash said of the weekends racing "All in all I was disappointed with the result, as I know we should have been significantly better placed. Saturday was mechanical issues a dropped chain in qualy then a broken steering joint. It was always going to be a big ask as we have only had a few test sessions to try and find the right set up on the new CRG chassis. For whatever reason I was just off the pace.

Ash was out testing the follwing Monday, unbenown to Ash the mechanic undertook a couple of blind trials. The race rubber that Ash had used during Glan y Gors showed it'self to be almost half a second a lap slower than the practice rubber. Ash said "Unfortunatley it's the luck of the draw when it comes to tyres. Although they are all supposed to be the same we all know that this is not the case and some tyre sets prove to be quicker than others, and I think that proves it."

Ash's dad said " Although Ash was disappointed wth his results I felt that he aquitted himself well. Mechanical problems on Saturday cost us. Sunday was a close finish 2/100ths of a second, another lap and we may well have taken it. Ash was unfortunate in so much as a 5 place penalty in the heats affected his grid position for the final. Had he not taken the penalty things may well have been very different. Should Ash have been held to account for other drivers being out of position on the form up lap, the jury's still out on that one -- you'll just have to decide for yourself. We aren't sure how this will affect the championship positions yet we will just have to wait and see when it's published".

GP Champion Ash switches allegiance to CRG

Barely a month away from arguably the most important date on his karting calendar – as he prepares to defend the prestigious Kartmasters ‘GP’ plate he clinched in 2009 – Ash Hand has elected to switch chassis from tried and tested Kosmic to CRG which is less predominant in UK karting circles.

Ash’s record in the Lewis Hamilton and Bernie Ecclestone-backed Formula Kart Stars (FKS) Championship this year speaks for itself, as he remains undefeated in the opening four rounds and looks to be on-course to follow in the wheeltracks of the youngest-ever F1 World Champion by lifting the coveted laurels come season’s end.

In fellow national series Super 1, the highly-rated young Nuneaton star has suffered a touch of misfortune, but his raw pace and talent have been every bit as much in evidence. Having achieved all that he has in the comparatively short period in which he has been racing on either a Kosmic or Alonso TonyKart derivative, when the opportunity arose to try out a CRG mount at PF International, it palpably whet his curiosity.

Ash in his new CRG kit

With so many UK drivers on the Kosmic and Alonso chassis it is difficult to gain any advantage in that area. Ash and his team believe the new CRG chassis will give him that edge. During a test session at PF International Ash was already setting the benchmark and leaving his arch-rival and the reigning FKS Junior Max Champion fairly trailing.

Ash once more demonstrated his skill and consistency in Rounds 3 and 4 of the Formula Kart Stars which took place at Whilton Mill over the weekend by taking the outright wins in timed qualifying, the heats and the finals on both days.

It was pretty much a repeat of the outstanding performance given at Rowrah during rounds 1 and 2. Maximum points in the champoinship table will consolidate Ash's campaign to win the series come the end of the season.

The competiton was left reeling in his wake to fight it out for the remaining podium positions. Ash joked " I think I'm going to need a bigger shelf to put my trophies on. I'm absolultely delighted to have taken the wins. I'd like to thank my family and the team for all the support they have given me, after all the trophies are as much theirs as they are mine.

Brendan, Ash's dad said " I can't quite believe Ash has had a clean sweep of the first four rounds it hasn't quite sunk in yet. The team did a great job the kart performed faultlessly. I don't think a lot of people realise how hard it is to be race leader for such a long time. It's a lot of concentration to maintain your pace and to hit the right line and apex's lap after lap. It just shows how Ash has matured as a driver his racecraft is second to none. I can't tell you how proud we all are and I just know he has a big future ahead of him."

Super One - Round 2 - Rowrah
Monday, 19 April 2010 06:51

The action at the weekend took place at Rowrah in round 2 of the Super One Championship. Going into the meeting Ash was sitting at ninth in the championship table.

In the timed Qualifying Ash recorded came in as the fourth fastest with only 0.16 of a second seperating the top five. In the two heats Ash took a win and a third which was good enough to give him P3 on the grid for the first of the two finals. During the course of the race Ash had managed to climb up into second place and he was closing fast on Andy King to battle for the lead. A sudden loss of power and Ash found himself losing four places before the chequered flag finally went out, crossing the line in sixth. In the second of the finals Ash was on the third row of the grid at P6. He was unable to show his true pace and was only able to make up a single place in the 21 lap race to take fifth place.

Although Ash was unable to replicate the performance he displayed in FKS Rounds one and two, it was however, sufficient to pull him up the Super One Championship table by three places to sixth. There are currently only fifty five points seperating the top ten with plenty more action in the following five rounds to come.

Ash said "Had it not been for the gremilins I would have been able to take another couple of slots in the championship. I guess that's just the way it goes sometimes, It's all left to race for though. I think the remaining rounds will be quite exciting with some good racing to come".
